Centrifugal Barrel Finishing (CBF) systems from Mass Finishing are the fastest and most economical form of finishing machine available. They are the industry workhorse in polishing, deburring and deflashing parts. From jet engine blades in the aerospace industry to heart valves and medical implants, these tumbling machines are the versatile and money-saving solution for polishing and deburring.
In a matter of minutes this deburr tool can clean up metal, acrylic or rubber parts are finished in what could take hours or even days by hand. The finish achieved by these machines is isotropic, meaning parts are polished uniformly and evenly, something that cannot be achieved by hand. Variable speed control allow these tumbling machines to achieve whatever finish the operator desires, from a simple polish at low speed, to full scale deburring and edge radiusing.
A centrifugal finishing machine / harperizing works on a principle similar to a ferris wheel meaning there are 4 barrels which would represent the seats on a ferris wheel and one large fly wheel. In 1 revolution of the fly wheel results in 1 complete rotation of each barrel.
Extremely high centrifugal forces can be generated on parts with this method. Using this concept in combination with various types of ceramic and organic corn cob media, virtually any part finish is achieved from burr removal to extremely high surface finish polishing.

Deburring medical device surgical parts as small as the tip of your pinky finger and complex would take hours if not days in other process equipment. Using the correct ratio of media, water and parts with a centrifugal barrel mass finishing system achieves uniformly deburred parts in less than 30 minutes with lot to lot stability unparalleled in other equipment.
A centrifugal barrel mass finishing system is able generate significantly more mass finishing energy delivered to the part due to the barrels rotating while the center turret rotates as well. This rotation combination effect can decrease cycle time on parts by as much as 30 times vs conventional vibratory bowl finishing equipment.
This “dueling” rotation causes various types of media inside of the barre to rub against the parts under pressure due to high “G” force from these centrifugal forces . The high pressure sliding of media and parts performs the surface finishing (polishing, deburring, etc) of the parts and reduces finishing time to just a few minutes from many hours.
How It Works
Each tumbling machine contains four barrels that are mounted to a drum. The operator fills the barrel with media, parts and water, roughly 50-90% full. During operation the entire drum of the debur tool rotates like a Ferris wheel. As the speed increases, the media and parts rub against one another randomly and repeatedly, removing even the smallest imperfections. In a matter of minutes the finishing cycle is complete and the parts are ready to be separated from the media.
